Is Your Website Not Generating Leads? Here's Why | BVS Web Design Yorkshire

Your Website Is Getting Visitors. So Why Isn’t Your Phone Ringing?

If you’re a Yorkshire service business getting decent traffic but very few enquiries, the problem almost certainly isn’t your product, your pricing or your reputation. It’s your website — and it’s more fixable than you think.

The Problem is More Common Than You Think

Most business owners assume that if their website looks professional, it’s doing its job. It isn’t always.

A website can look perfectly fine and still be silently losing you customers every day. Visitors arrive, look around, and leave without getting in touch — not because they weren’t interested, but because something got in the way.

This is one of the most common problems I see with Yorkshire service businesses. And the good news is that the causes are almost always the same, and almost always fixable.

The 7 Most Common Reasons Your Website Isn’t Generating Leads

Here’s what I find when I audit a website that gets traffic but not enquiries:

1. Your phone number and contact details are hard to find

This sounds obvious, but it’s the most common issue I see. Visitors shouldn’t have to hunt for a way to contact you. Your phone number should be visible at the top of every page, without scrolling. If it’s only in the footer or on the contact page, you’re losing people.

2. There’s no clear next step

What do you want a visitor to do? Call you? Fill in a form? Book an appointment? If that action isn’t prominent and obvious, most people won’t take it. Every page of your website needs a clear, visible call to action.

3. Your contact form is broken (and you don’t know it)

This happens more often than you’d think. A plugin update, a server change, an email going to spam — and suddenly enquiries are disappearing into the void. One of the first things I check in any audit is whether the contact form is actually delivering messages. For Ilkley Dental Care, fixing this alone was transformative.

4. Visitors don’t trust you yet

A visitor who doesn’t know you needs to see evidence that you’re legitimate and that others have had a good experience. That means reviews, testimonials, case studies, and professional presentation. If those signals are missing or buried, people leave before they get in touch.

5. Your website talks about you, not your customer

Most business websites lead with ‘what we do’ and ‘who we are’. But visitors arrive with a problem they need solved. If your homepage doesn’t quickly show them that you understand their situation and can help, they’ll move on. The most effective websites lead with the customer’s problem, not the business’s CV.

6. It’s slow or broken on mobile

More than half of your visitors are probably on a phone. If your site loads slowly, looks wrong, or is difficult to use on mobile, a significant chunk of your potential leads are bouncing before they see anything. This is a technical issue, but it has a direct commercial impact.

7. You’re not showing up in search at all

Sometimes the problem isn’t conversion — it’s visibility. If potential customers are searching for what you offer in Yorkshire but your site doesn’t appear, no amount of conversion optimisation will help. A basic local SEO foundation makes a significant difference for most service businesses.

What Fixing These Issues Actually Looks Like

Ilkley Dental Care: From Zero Faith to 30+ Enquiries Per Month

Ilkley Dental Care came to me having lost faith in their website entirely. It looked reasonable, but it had a broken contact form, a buried phone number, confusing navigation, and no clear calls to action. They thought websites just didn't work for dental practices. After a rebuild focused on making it easy for patients to get in touch, they went from almost no website enquiries to more than 30 per month. Same traffic. Different website.

Beauty Bar: From Zero Enquiries to 20 per month

Beauty Bar came to me with a well ranking site, with some pages getting 20,000 impressions per month. But click through rate was low, and conversions even lower. I rebuilt trust signals, cleared up their Call to Action buttons and their booking procedure. After my intervention, they started receiving enquiries again - they are currently getting 20 per month. From nothing!

These weren’t dramatic technical changes. They were the kind of straightforward fixes that most business websites need but never get — because nobody’s ever looked at the site with fresh eyes and asked ‘what’s stopping people from getting in touch?‘
